"6 Bad Excuses Not To Study Abroad."

Found a post on “GSU Studyabroad” Facebook page about an article, explaining why you should study abroad! To read the story, follow this link: http://matadornetwork.com/abroad/6-bad-excuses-not-to-study-abroad/.

So what is stopping you from studying abroad? Is it finances? Well, do research and apply for scholarships Georgia State and other fellow programs can offer you. With the IEF scholarship on campus, you can write something as simple as a 300 word essay and be awarded anywhere from $800-1500. That is too amazing to pass up! To find other scholarships and financial aid, click this link: http://www.studyabroad.gsu.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Abroad.ViewLink&Parent_ID=0&Link_ID=DBE16D9B-26B9-564D-D67DC1350948C491&pID=4&lID=17

If you have no idea how, when, or where you want to study, attend a Globe-Trekker Seminar and then you will have an opportunity to meet with an advisor after the seminar.

I got to ring in the new year of 2011 in Beijing, China, with my study abroad trip with the Confucius Institute :) My other friends have gone to the following places: Belgium, France, Spain, Australia, England, Egypt, South Africa, Costa Rica, Germany, Italy, and one of my friends will be studying in South Korea in the fall and another friend will be studying in Italy for the fall semester too. You can literally go across the world! So what are you waiting for?

Zeta Mu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha wins Chapter of the year!

image

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at Georgia State University just won National Chapter of the Year! Alpha Phi Alpha is a part of the NPHC Greek community on campus. NPHC are historically your African-American sororities and fraternities.

Not only do they have social activities like “Alphas Gone Wild” every year, they do a lot of community service events as well. Last year, they won the President’s Award for Community Service. Check out the article by clicking this link: http://sarahbalter.wordpress.com/2010/04/29/zeta-mu-wins-president%E2%80%99s-award-for-community-service/

During my freshman year, they did a program called “Heart of the Homeless,” doing a simulation in Hurt Park overnight, to understand and cope with struggles the homelessness community combat daily. We got a taste of what it is like to beg for money across street corners, and we camped overnight in tents in Hurt Park, to experience the daily nights sleeping on the streets. Through this experience, I learned that not all homeless are just “Drug addicts or alcoholics,” as the media would say. I met a man named Dr. Dre, who has been homeless since the age of about 11 years old. At that age, he was the oldest of several siblings, and his mom just told him he needed to be on his own, that she needed to take care of his younger brothers and sisters, and this man was in his mid-40s. And since that experience, I have volunteered at different homeless shelters/rehabilitation centers in Atlanta, so I can hear more people’s stories and not believe the stigma of the homeless. 40% of homeless men are veterans (http://www.homelesstaskforce.org/thefacts.html).

"Stay true to you."

I just came back from a family vacation with my family to Smokey Mountains. I’ve been gone since Thursday night, and it was one of the best vacations ever with my family :)

While driving to the Smokey Mountains, this is a conversation I had with my cousin in high school:

Richard: “Grace, are you still a Christian?”

Me: “Yes”

Me: “Why do you ask?”

Richard: “People change in college.”

Me: “I’ve been blessed to not have changed. I haven’t changed who I am.”

I went to a small Christian school called Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, GA, and I graduated the Class of 2008, with about 72 other senior classmates. I remember sitting in one of the counselor’s office, jokingly asking if they could fail me in some classes because I did not want to graduate yet. After hearing so many stories of people changing in college, and falling into peer pressure, I was scared that I would go down the same path, that I would “lose myself” throughout my college experience. I feared changing who I was to impress others and to “fit in.”

Looking back just 3 years ago, I think it was silly that I was so scared. I am going to my senior year, not having changed my core values and beliefs that were instilled in me throughout high school. And I am truly blessed to be at Georgia State, where I can be myself, comfortable in my own skin, and embrace who I am. So my advice is, stay true to yourself and what you believe in. Do not let anyone or anything change who you are as a person. And I am not saying I am perfect either. I know the mistakes I have made throughout my life, but I have become a better and stronger person through all of my experiences, through the good and bad. So find out what makes you, YOU, and don’t lose yourself in your college years.

Call GSU Escort Service 24/7!

If you are walking around campus at night by yourself, utilize the 24/7 Escort Service that Georgia State has. I have used it plenty of times when I am around campus, and they have taken me to my car in a parking deck, or to local MARTA station. Their number is (404)-413-2100. This number is also the non-emergency number for GSU Police.

1% Loan will be offered for fall semester

With the new changes to HOPE, Georgia Student Finance Commission, has decided to allow students to apply for a loan, that only has an interest rate of 1%, and can be paid back, up to 10 years after college graduation. For current college students to be eligible, please make sure you have your financial aid like FAFSA completed for 2011-2012 school year, as only eligible students must have applied for financial aid.

Georgia State will notify you if you have received this award. This loan is not just for HOPE scholars, as the GPA requirement is 2.0 for current college students and a 2.5 GPA for high school students.

High school students and college students can apply at www.gacollege411.org. The deadline is July 15, 2011

This loan can help fund costs that HOPE is no longer paying for. Read this article for more information: http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-politics-elections/state-begins-low-interest-977323.html
